Hairstyling with Ease

Helpful tips to make your hairstyling routine RA Friendly

  • Minimal daily styling- a great haircut is so helpful

  • Less arm, shoulder and hand strain- short to medium length hair

  • Styles that last multiple days- salon blowouts

The Best Low-Maintenance Haircuts

Soft Layers (Long or Medium Length)

  • Movement without needing daily styling

  • Grows out well

Blunt Lob (Long Bob)

  • Looks intentional even air-dried

  • Easy to tie back

(a blunt bob does require more upkeep)

Textured Bob

  • Built-in shape = less work

  • Works with natural texture

Long Hair

  • One-length or minimal layers

  • Easier to braid or clip up

(make sure to mention to your stylist how you intend to style your hair)

How to Make Your Style Last Longer

  • Dry shampoo as a reset, not just oil control

  • Silk/satin pillowcases or bonnets

  • Looser styles to avoid needing to redo

  • Refresh trick, mist with water to break up bed head

Tools & Products That Make It Easier

  • Lightweight blow dryer

  • Wide-handle brushes or detanglers

  • Claw clips vs tight elastics

  • Leave-in products that condition and offer heat/UV protection

  • Air-dry creams or texture sprays

My Low-Energy Hair Routine

When I’m feeling low energy or a flare up, I go to bed with two braids (imagine Wednesday Addams).

In the morning I release the braids, which leaves my hair wavy. Then I either leave it as is, or clip my hair half up.

I tend to skip all hot tools on low energy days, it just feels like too much work. If I have flyaways I’ll add a bit of gel or pomade to smooth out instead of flat ironing.

Letting Go of High-Maintenance Expectations

  • Not every day needs styled hair, as a hairdresser this one was tough for me.

  • “Put together” looks different with chronic illness and that’s okay

  • Choosing ease doesn’t mean you’ve given up on beauty

Conclusion

With time you’ll find your version of easy but styled looks that work with your energy levels, which might look different everyday and that’s okay. As long as you feel good about yourself.
